About Projeto Crescer Betânia... changing lives in Cafubá
OUR HISTORY
In 1996, the Igreja Presbiteriana Betânia began an evangelistic outreach in one of the poorest slums in the community of Cafubá, a district within the city of Niterói, Brazil. The social, economical, and spiritual difficulties affecting the community were appalling. Included among them were drug abuse, alcoholism, prostitution, sexual abuse, and extreme poverty.
Sadly, a great number of children were involved in or suffering from these difficult circumstances. As a result, an outreach began with the focus of reaching these children for Christ by addressing their basic needs. Our hope is that as we address these needs and share the love of Jesus with them, they will go on to lead lives devoted to Christ and have an opportunity at a brighter future.
THE FUTURE
Within the community of Niterói there is an increasing disparity between the “haves” and the “have-nots”. Unfortunately, one of the greatest contributing factors to this disparity is a faulty public education system. Those who are able to afford private school have a much better chance of entering the university system, attaining a degree, and going on to secure gainful employment.
Those who are unable to pay for private school are left to fend for themselves in a public school system that is consistently lacking in materials, qualified professionals, and governmental funding. The result? Our young people are growing up illiterate, uneducated, and without a way to make a living for themselves. Drug trafficking, theft, kidnapping, and prostitution are an all too common result.
Our long term goal is to develop a quality private school specifically for low income families. In addition, we are committed to expanding community resources that will aid the physical, intellectual, spiritual, and social needs of Cafubá.
